When someone tells me they have friends or family visiting Chicago, I always tell them they have take an architectural cruise on the river. It’s basically a boat ride up and down the river with a guide who points out the history of the different buildings, but it’s the best way to see the prettiest parts of the city, hands down.
It had been a while since I last took one of the tours myself–so long that there are still some black and white prints in my son’s room that I took with a film SLR–and we took one this year on my wife’s birthday. I’m more interested in some of the grittier parts of the waterline and bridges now, but I still highly recommend it if you’re in town.
